The Ronald McDonald Houses are a “Home Away From Home” for thousands of families every year who must travel to the Kansas City area to receive medical treatment for a sick or injured child. Together, the three Ronald McDonald Houses (Cherry Street House, Longfellow House and Wylie House) provide temporary lodging to as many as 80 families each night while their children undergo vital medical care. The family Suites inside our Longfellow House allow us to serve immuno-suppressed children and their families (i.e. organ transplants and bone marrow transplants). Both Houses offer a warm and welcoming place to sleep, as well as full kitchen facilities, laundry facilities, living rooms and recreation areas to provide a homey environment where families may relax away from the stresses of the hospital and meet other families experiencing similar crises.
Cherry Street - Answering the Call for Families in Need
After months of planning and site selection in the historic Longfellow/Dutch Hill Neighborhood, ground was broken at 25th and Cherry Streets on the second Ronald McDonald House in Kansas City in June of 1987. The property was donated by Hallmark Corporation to Children's Mercy Hospital and leased to our organization for the new Ronald McDonald House. The Longfellow House was a unique project made possible by an unprecedented partnership between KCMO Parks and Recreation, Hallmark Corporation and Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC). RMHC built a new 41 bedroom Ronald McDonald House in Longfellow Park directly west of our existing house on Cherry Street. The facility was designed with many “green” or environmentally sustainable features that enable it to be ultra-efficient in terms of energy consumption and a healthy atmosphere for children and their families who call the House their “home away from home” while in Kansas City for medical care. Wylie House - A Labor of LoveThe Wylie House was the third Ronald McDonald House opened on Feb. 12, 2015. Adding 20 more bedrooms to make 87 total in Kansas City, the Wylie House was built in order for RMHC-KC to be there every time for the families that need their services. With area hospitals growing and expanding, the waiting list grew to unmanageable numbers, and this House was the answer to that need.
