McDonald's Relationship

Ronald McDonald House Charities has been McDonald’s ‘charity of choice’ from the day we opened the doors of our first Ronald McDonald House. McDonald’s restaurants are a significant partner in the development of all Ronald McDonald Houses around the world. Each Ronald McDonald House Chapter is independently operated and develops an individual relationship with the owner/operators and their restaurants within their community. The partnership is unique and extremely beneficial, but sometimes often misunderstood.

The McDonald’s Corporation provides a license agreement allowing each Ronald McDonald House to use the trademarks of the corporation. Each Ronald McDonald House is governed in full by a separate Board of Directors, establishes its own mission and policies and manages its own budget and fundraising process. Assets are not co-mingled. It is the responsibility of each Ronald McDonald House chapter to cultivate a fundraising relationship with their local McDonald’s owner / operators.

Our local McDonald’s owner/operators wholeheartedly support the Kansas City Chapter by personally providing financial, volunteer and in-kind product support. Various fundraising activities happen inside and outside the restaurants. One such activity includes the placement of donation boxes in each restaurant, which makes it easy for the community to support families facing medical crisis.

Additionally through McDonald’s, RMHC has access to the services and support of local as well as national donors and suppliers. For example, The Coca-Cola Company supplies vending machines and free bottled water, juices and soda to all Houses nationwide. Houses collect and use the change from the machines to support family programs.

Other examples of McDonald’s involvement include:

  • Local Owner/Operator’s serve on our Board of Directors and Advisory Board
  • A percentage of in-restaurant sales of USA Today are donated to RMHC
  • McDonald’s conducts two in-store annual fundraiser called ‘Give a Little Love’ and ‘McHappy Day®’ plus a portion of each Happy Meal sold benefits RMHC 365 days a year!
  • Owner/Operators and their suppliers financially support local events such as the Red Shoe Shindig and the RMHC-KC Trent Green Golf Classic

    Overall, funds that are collected by our local restaurants contribute between 18-20% of our annual operating budget. We value our long-standing partnership with McDonalds as well as the support we receive from the entire community to help us fulfill our mission of reducing the burden of childhood illness on children and their families.
